Cardenal Sandri: "La Iglesia debe darle más lugar a la mujer"
Los desafíos del sucesor de Benedicto, según un "papable" argentino
CIUDAD DEL VATICANO.- La Iglesia Católica debe abrirse a las mujeres durante el próximo pontificado, permitiendo que tengan más posiciones de liderazgo en el Vaticano y también más allá de él, dijo el cardenal argentino Leonardo Sandri, uno de los que tendrían gran influencia en la elección del nuevo pontífice y que a su vez suena fuerte como papable.
En una entrevista con la agencia Reuters, el cardenal, de 69 años, también opinó que el próximo papa no debería ser elegido según su proveniencia geográfica, sino que debe ser un "hombre santo", calificado para conducir a la Iglesia en tiempos de crisis.
Sandri precisó que uno de los grandes desafíos que enfrenta la Iglesia es tratar de ganarse nuevamente a quienes "perdieron la fe" y "le dieron la espalda a Dios". Se cree que Sandri, un experimentado diplomático y ex número dos de la burocracia vaticana, tendrá una gran influencia en la elección del sucesor de Benedicto XVI.
"El papel de las mujeres en el mundo ha aumentado, y eso es algo sobre lo que la Iglesia tiene que preguntarse a sí misma", dijo Sandri en su oficina, ubicada a pocos metros de la Plaza San Pedro.
"[Las mujeres] tienen que ocupar un papel mucho más importante en la vida de la Iglesia, para que puedan contribuir en muchas de esas áreas, que al menos en parte, hasta hoy, están abiertas sólo a los hombres. Ése debe ser nuestro desafío en el futuro", declaró el purpurado, que dirige el Departamento Vaticano de las Iglesias Orientales.
Actualmente, las mujeres, en su mayoría monjas, sólo pueden acceder a posiciones de subsecretarias en el gobierno vaticano, tercera jerarquía después de presidente y secretario, puestos que hasta ahora sólo han sido ocupados por sacerdotes. En este momento, hay sólo dos subsecretarias, una de ellas monja y la otra laica.
Sandri, un hijo de inmigrantes italianos que ha sido mencionado en la lista de los papables, dijo que era "ni más ni menos que justo" que las mujeres ocupen posiciones más importantes en la administración vaticana, "donde pueden hacer una contribución importante, debido a sus aptitudes". Además, agregó: "También deben ser copartícipes del diálogo y el análisis de la vida de la Iglesia y en otras áreas, incluso en la formación de sacerdotes, donde pueden desempeñar un papel muy, pero muy importante".
La Iglesia enseña que las mujeres no pueden ser sacerdotes porque Jesús conscientemente eligió sólo a varones como sus apóstoles. Sandri no dejó traslucir nada que implique un posible cambio de esa regla.
El cardenal argentino dio la entrevista a la agencia Reuters a medida que los purpurados de todo el mundo llegaban al Vaticano para la reunión preliminar que se llevará a cabo hoy, un anticipo del cónclave a puertas cerradas que, según está previsto, se iniciará en la Capilla Sixtina a partir del 10 o el 11 de marzo.
Sandri detalló cuáles deberían ser, en su opinión, las cualidades más importantes que definan al próximo papa. Destacó entre ellas la santidad, la fortaleza física, las habilidades de buen comunicador y la capacidad de gobierno. "El problema es encontrar esas cuatro cualidades en una misma persona. A veces, alguien tiene exceso de una cualidad y poco de otras. Para mí, lo más importante es que sea un hombre de fe que no tenga miedo", dijo el cardenal. "Por sobre todo, me gustaría que el nuevo papa sea, si no ya un santo, algo difícil de exigir, por lo menos alguien que haya tomado el camino de la santidad, a través de una vida de humildad, trabajo, oración y testimonio del Evangelio", explicó Sandri.
El cardenal señaló que las cualidades de un papa deberían ser:
"Vigor, resistencia física, capacidad de cumplir con todas las obligaciones del pontificado".
"Grandes dotes de comunicador, el don de ser capaz de explicarles a los otros que el papa es el representante de Dios y el vicario de Cristo, pero que también es un ser humano que sonríe, que da la mano, que abraza a la gente, que se acerca al pueblo y deja que se acerquen a él".
"También debería ser alguien que sepa gobernar, no sólo por su experiencia personal, sino que sepa rodearse de gente que pueda ayudarlo en esa tarea".
Parte de la administración central del Vaticano, conocida como la Curia, ha sido acusada de no impedir algunos de los escándalos y contratiempos que marcaron el turbulento pontificado de Benedicto XVI.
Son muchas las especulaciones que señalan que el nuevo papa podría no ser europeo, que podría ser tal vez de África o Asia, dos lugares donde la Iglesia es más vibrante y está menos anquilosada que en Europa y otras regiones desarrolladas.
Pero Sandri advierte en contra de elegir a un papa por su pasaporte.
"No confío en las definiciones de tipo geográfico. Nadie debería ser elegido papa simplemente por no ser europeo", señaló el cardenal.
"Tenemos que elegir al mejor, al que tenga todas esas cualidades personales de salud, vigor, formación y experiencia, sin importar su origen geográfico", dijo.
El cardenal Peter Turkson, un ghanés de 64 años que dirige el Departamento de Justicia y Paz del Vaticano, está entre los principales candidatos africanos. "La Iglesia está preparada para un papa negro, pero tal vez el mundo no", dijo Sandri. "Estamos abiertos a cualquiera, siempre y cuando sea el mejor, el más preparado y calificado, para que sepa afrontar esta época tan difícil para la Iglesia y para el mundo."
