El rey león: animación realista y una historia conocida

La relación entre Simba y el rey Mufasa, el exilio del pequeño protagonista dominado por la culpa tras la muerte de su padre, el encuentro con los queribles Pumba y Timón, la historia de amor con Nala y la recuperación del trono en poder del despiadado Scar en alianza con las siniestras hienas conforman la historia de decadencia, redención y regreso con gloria de El rey león, este auténtico clásico del cine de animación, que luego tuvo una celebrada versión musical en Broadway.
Un cuarto de siglo más tarde, y en medio de la ola de remakes live action que Disney está produciendo a partir de sus populares films animados, Jon Favreau (responsable de la nueva entrega de El libro de la selva) dirigió este largometraje que cuenta, básicamente, la misma historia (aunque la duración pasó de los 88 minutos de 1994 a los 118 actuales).
Sin embargo, algo difícil de explicar en palabras y que tiene que ver con cuestiones intangibles como la magia y los sentimientos se ha perdido en esta operación de reciclaje artístico. Seamos precisos: la flamante El rey león no deja de ser una película de animación porque lo que se hace aquí es construir en computadora un universo en apariencia real de animales en movimiento que no es tal, ya que todo es producto del incansable (y fascinante) trabajo de los artistas visuales. La sensación de realismo naturalista se consigue con creces y no deja de asombrar en lo formal, pero a nivel de sensibilidad, de interacción emocional entre los personajes el resultado es bastante más frío y distante.
Algo similar ocurre con los covers de las canciones originales de Tim Rice y Elton John. Las nuevas versiones de los populares temas, ahora producidas por el cotizado Pharrell Williams, tienen un sonido impecable, pero las melodías de "Hakuna Matata" o "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" ya no consiguen el mismo impacto. Así, en definitiva, este El rey león modelo 2019 termina siendo una película para admirar y ya no tanto para sentir.
Para quienes elijan alguna función con copia subtitulada podrán disfrutar como atractivo adicional (y no menor) de las voces originales de Donald Glover (Simba), Beyoncé (Nala), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar), John Oliver (Zazu), James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Seth Rogen (Pumba) y Billy Eichner (Timón), entre otras figuras. Vale la pena el esfuerzo de buscar con lupa en la cartelera hasta encontrar esta alternativa claramente superadora respecto de la versión doblada al castellano.
