La influencia del pop jamaiquino hoy se puede escuchar en todos lados –desde "Controlla" de Drake hasta "Shape of You" de Ed Sheeran–, pero a los artistas actuales del género todavía les cuesta lograr un impacto en la escena internacional. Protoje es parte de una nueva generación de músicos que mezclan las raíces tradicionales del reggae con influencias del hip-hop, pop y rock. "El reggae no es una música de hotel para que las personas escuchen mientras toman piña colada", dice el cantante jamaiquino. "No quiero ser encasillado." Pone de ejemplo a "Bout Noon", un groove suave que se destaca en su cuarto álbum, A Matter of Time: "No tiene nada de lo tradicional del reggae", dice Protoje. "Pero aun así tiene la sensación del reggae. Queremos hacer esto tan fresco que la gente se cuestione qué es la música reggae." Si bien el nuevo álbum debutó recientemente en el Número Uno en la lista de reggae en Estados Unidos, para Protoje no es suficiente. "No es difícil aparecer en los rankings exclusivos del género", dice. "Estoy más preocupado por entrar al Top 200 de todos los géneros. Espero que mi próximo disco pueda alcanzar ese objetivo, incluso si llego solo al puesto 199."

Jah9 profundiza en las raíces del dub. En "Steamers a Bubble", un clásico de 1982, el bajo ágil fluye en lo profundo, mientras ella rapea barras con gracia sobre un flow cancionero.
Alborosie
Este cantante y multiinstrumentista de origen siciliano, radicado en Kingston, invitó a ex compañeros de banda de Bob Marley para crear June’s Unbreakable, un refinado homenaje al roots reggae.
Kabaka Pyramid
Fan del Wu-Tang Clan y The Roots, Kabaka Pyramid tiene una destreza impresionante para melodías, como se escucha en "Kaught Up", una canción de dancehall lista para la radio.
