Un caprichoso objetivo
–Maestro, ¿Qué le pareció la actuación de Tiger en la primera vuelta del PGA Championship?
–Indudablemente, Woods nos sigue mostrando que se mantiene con su caprichosa idea de batir todos los récords, y que va camino a lograr lo que se proponga, siempre y cuando lo dejen sus rivales. En Hazeltine se puso el objetivo de conseguir el Major que le está faltando este año y eso le da una gran motivación a la hora de salir a jugar. No sólo está demostrando que puede ganar el título, sino que la gente lo está sintiendo, lo palpita.
–¿Ese sentimiento también es advertido por los demás jugadores?
–Los rivales se dan cuenta, pero daría la sensación de que tratan de superarlo y no pueden. Igualmente, aún es muy temprano para decir que Tiger no tendrá sobresaltos de aquí al domingo. La primera vuelta es una preparatoria, nada más. Todavía faltan tres días. Incluso, puede aparecer algún jugador que salte a los primeros puestos espontáneamente. Nunca se sabe.
–Padraig Harrington está a un golpe. ¿Es una amenaza para las ambiciones de Tiger?
–Parece como si la pelea de Akron continuara una semana después. Habrá que ver si durará todo el fin de semana o si será momentánea. Puede ser que Harrington esté buscando una revancha y que eso lo haga rendir un poco mejor.
–¿Los argentinos podrán superar el corte tras quedar lejos de los líderes en la primera vuelta?
–Están en una situación difícil. Tanto el Pigu Romero, que terminó con +3, como el Pato Cabrera, con +4, tendrán que trabajar mucho en la vuelta de hoy para poder pasar el corte. Esperemos que puedan superarlo y que los veamos jugando todo el fin de semana. Pero no les será fácil porque se les agregó una presión que no tenían antes de comenzar el torneo.
–¿Hubo jugadores que se favorecieron o se perjudicaron con la longitud de la cancha?
–Tal como se insinuaba antes de que se comenzara a jugar, la de Hazeltine es una cancha que favorece a aquellos jugadores que pegan más largo y que perjudica a quienes tienen tiros más cortos. Además, el trazado castiga de otra manera a quienes cometen errores. Tiger supo sacar provecho de la longitud, aunque no fue el único factor que determinó su buena vuelta.
–¿Notó que los jugadores tuvieron dificultad para llegar al green en una cantidad normal de golpes?
–Eso es algo que se notó en los hoyos más largos. En el hoyo 12, por ejemplo, que es un par 4 larguísimo, de 518 yardas, hubo solamente cinco birdies. Eso da la pauta de que a los jugadores se les hizo muy difícil llegar al green. ¿Cómo hace un jugador que pega corto para cubrir esa distancia con dos golpes? Evidentemente, es una cancha que le hace las cosas más fáciles a los jugadores "largos".
