Papamanía: la fe abre mercados
El turismo religioso representa el 20% del sector a nivel global y mueve 330 millones de personas; por el "efecto Francisco", Buenos Aires comparte vidriera con Roma y Jerusalén en las agencias europeas
Con su estilo tan particular, en sus 30 meses de papado, Francisco construyó puentes y derribó muros, pero también abrió nuevos mercados. Y uno de ellos es el del turismo argentino, que se coló entre los destinos más buscados por aquellos que fijan el rumbo con la brújula de la fe. Así, Roma, Jerusalén y Buenos Aires aparecen juntas en las vitrinas de los operadores turísticos de Europa.
Como ocurrió con la Cracovia de Juan Pablo II, la capital argentina es ahora una plaza destacada del turismo religioso, una actividad que justifica el 20% del mercado a nivel global y que involucra a unos 330 millones de personas, según cifras de la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT). Se trata de unos 600 millones de viajes, de los que el 40% tiene como destino Europa.
Es que "el Papa del fin del mundo" despertó el interés por descubrir su país natal, aunque todavía falta promoción. Para Santiago Cano, referente de Turismo Religioso de la Federación Argentina de Asociaciones de Empresas de Viajes y Turismo (Faevyt), "hay un potencial muy grande y un pronóstico favorable con la cooperación del sector público y del privado para consolidar la oferta".
Poco después de ser proclamado Sumo Pontífice, una misión argentina llevó a Roma propuestas para los empresarios italianos ávidos de ofrecer circuitos que permitieran conocer la vida de Jorge Bergoglio. Desde entonces, la ciudad y la provincia de Buenos Aires desarrollaron ofertas particulares con un éxito relativo, y unas 70 agencias ya trabajan productos específicos, de las cuales 32 lo hacen con salidas regulares. Para Cano, estos "pequeños grandes logros" demuestran la intención de los operadores por crear una nueva unidad de negocios que complemente su oferta.
Entre enero y abril llegaron al país unos 702.900 turistas internacionales, que gastaron un promedio de US$ 1022 cada uno, según el Observatorio de Turismo de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Para ellos, la Capital Federal ofrece los sábados, domingos y feriados los circuitos papales que salen de la basílica de San José de Flores. Desde mayo de 2013 se realizaron 320 visitas con más de 7000 asistentes.
Además de Buenos Aires, los operadores destacan el enorme patrimonio religioso que suponen las manzanas jesuíticas de Córdoba, las ruinas de San Ignacio en Misiones o el Señor y la Virgen del Milagro en Salta. Para Viviana Castro, directora de la agencia turística religiosa Viditerra 1915, por cada nuevo turista que llega es posible un desembolso de entre $ 10.000 y $ 12.000. "Francisco ayudó a mostrar al mundo que la Argentina es interesante para el turismo religioso. Ahora es momento de hacer difusión en el exterior", dice.
Además, con Francisco, la Argentina entró en el top ten de países que más turistas despacharon hacia Roma en 2014, con 329.925 visitantes, según cifras del Ente Turístico de la Región del Lacio. Además, la agencia italiana de estadísticas señaló que la Argentina es el grupo nacional de mayor crecimiento, con un alza de casi 182% desde 2009, aunque el mayor incremento se da desde 2013. Según estimaciones de la embajada argentina ante la Santa Sede, entre 1800 y 2000 argentinos visitan la Plaza de San Pedro cada miércoles o domingo para ver al Papa, que a fines de agosto cumplió 100 audiencias públicas, que congregaron a más de 15 millones de peregrinos.
Así las cosas, la balanza turística local profundizó su déficit. Mientras que la llegada y los gastos de turistas extranjeros descienden -en junio marcaron una baja interanual del 1% en cada categoría, según el Indec-, la cantidad de argentinos que viajan al exterior y sus erogaciones fuera del país crecen a ritmo sostenido, ayudados por las cuotas fijas, las dificultades para ahorrar y la expectativa de devaluación. En estas condiciones, las compañías multiplicaron sus servicios. Aerolíneas Argentinas, por ejemplo, viaja a diario a Roma desde noviembre de 2013 y muchas agencias colocaron las audiencias del Papa en su portfolio de paquetes para Europa.
María del Carmen Altube, directora de Villamil Altube Viajes, empresa con foco en peregrinaciones y viajes religiosos, reconoce esta competencia, pero destaca las nuevas oportunidades que generan los viajes del Papa, como el que realizará a los Estados Unidos esta semana. De hecho, la presencia de Francisco en Paraguay, en julio último, significó unos US$ 200 millones en hotelería, gastronomía y transporte para ese país. "Francisco abre rutas y permite organizar grupos y llevar a muchos argentinos", explica Altube.
Los paquetes turísticos arrancan en los US$ 3000 (los low cost para jóvenes), pero pueden llegar hasta US$ 6400 (18 días en Roma y santuarios de Italia), US$ 5300 (17 días en Tierra Santa: (Israel, Palestina y Jordania) o US$ 7400 (20 días en las Rutas de San Pablo: Turquía, Chipre y Grecia).
El desafío local
Los destinos crecen en visitas, pero el gasto promedio es bajo
