Ole Miss QB Trainidad Chambliss welcomes pressure that comes with fame and aims to refine his game

When Mississippi quarterback Trinidad Chambliss watches the Houdini acts from last season that made him a college football sensation, there is a part of him that would rather avoid doing that again.

The ability to escape converging pass-rushers, and seemingly ad-lib his way into clutch gains on the ground or through the air, was never more evident than during the Rebels' CFP quarterfinal victory over favored Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

When Chambliss saw the post-game highlights, one of his first thoughts was: "That was kind of dumb in the moment. Like, if I would have gotten sacked or I would have fallen down, I’m putting myself — and I’m putting my team — in a really bad position.”

Chambliss appreciates that some of the crazy plays he pulled off during a heady first season with Ole Miss have inspired analysts to refer to him as "the face of college football” in 2026. EA Sports even considered putting Chambliss on the cover of a new edition of its popular college football video game, but decided against it because of a legal dispute with the NCAA over whether he would be eligible to play this season.

As Chambliss enters his final season, with Ole Miss ranked ninth in the preseason AP Top 25 poll , he aims to work with new offensive coordinator John David Baker on a more mature, composed and refined style of play.

“I’m trying to attack this year more as a pro ... knowing that I’ll be draft eligible and I’ll be going to the NFL,” Chambliss said. "So, just making sure that my football IQ is increasing, leadership role is increasing, and just clean up the little details as a quarterback and as a leader on the team.”

In 2024, Chambliss played at Division II Ferris State in his native Michigan. Before that, he says he nearly quit football in favor of playing point guard for a Division III basketball program. But after leading Ferris State to a Division II national championship , he took an offer to be a projected backup at Ole Miss in 2025.

An injury to season-opening starter Austin Simmons thrust Chambliss into the spotlight, and his ability to run circles around frustrated pass-rushers while finding receivers breaking open downfield made him such a hit in Oxford, Mississippi, that fans there began flying flags of his namesake Caribbean island nation, Trinidad and Tobago.

“The Ole Miss fans, they’re very creative and it’s awesome to see," Chambliss said.

Meanwhile, Chambliss said that while serving as a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana, this summer, he met a Trinidad and Tobago native who told him that many in his country have become captivated by Ole Miss football in the past year.

All that attention can mean a lot of pressure for quarterback who doesn’t even have one full season as a Division I FBS starter on his resume yet.

“Pressure is a privilege. I prayed to be in this situation,” Chambliss said. “It’s what I’ve asked for. So, I’ve just got to do what I’ve been taught to do, what I’ve been doing my whole life, which is just play ball.”

This year, Chambliss could have opted to transfer to any number of programs, including perhaps LSU, where his former coach, Lane Kiffin, accepted a job right after the 2025 regular season — a decision led Ole Miss to order Kiffin out immediately and promote defensive coordinator Pete Golding as Kiffin's successor heading into the 2025 postseason.

But Chambliss wanted to the chance to capitalize on what he accomplished at Ole Miss, to honor relationships there and leave a more lasting legacy.

“If you know me, you know that I’m a very loyal person. I value relationships a lot,” Chambliss said. “There was just too much at Ole Miss and too many relationships that I couldn’t just throw away.”

While Chambliss had no prior relationship with Baker, the new coordinator had worked under Kiffin at Ole Miss before. He is familiar with the offense and asserted that whatever tweaks he makes will cater to Chambliss' strengths.

“If Trinidad likes it, then I like it, because it’s got a great chance to work,” said Baker, who joined the program during its CFP run last December as more of an observer before officially taking over this season.

Baker said he expects Chambliss to have a supporting cast with which he can win.

Whatever happens, Chambliss will lean on the perspective he's gained from working his way up from Division II, persevering through legal uncertainties in the offseason and navigating changes on the coaching staff — all in the span of little more than a year.

“Everyone’s journey is different," Chambliss said. "I’m grateful for that journey — and I wouldn’t change it.”
